Scrapping the ‘first country of entry’ rule for asylum seekers: How big of a deal would it be?

The European Commission is planning to propose getting rid of a rule – the so-called Dublin Regulation – that allows EU member states to deport asylum seekers back to the country where they first entered the EU. The media have been presenting the move as potentially placing a greater burden on the UK. What is the likely impact? Open Europe’s Vincenzo Scarpetta gives his initial assessment.
